Toonoo Sharky RCA

Date of Birth: 1970 in Iqaluit
Residence: Cape Dorset
Toonoo comes from a family of artists. He is the son of sculptor Josephee Sharky (son of artist Sharky Nuna) and two of his younger brothers, Alasua and Napachie, are also artists. He learned to carve by watching his grandfather Qupapik Ragee, a prominent carver, after Toonoo’s father passed away. His characteristic technique is his manner of inlaying antler or ivory for the eyes of his carvings, giving his sculptures a striking gaze.  Toonoo has exhibited consistently since the late 1980s and was elected a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts in 2002.
