Nuna Parr

Sort by:

Date of Birth: 1949 near Cape Dorset
Residence: Cape Dorset
Nuna Parr’s adoptive parents were graphic artists Parr and Eleeshushe, who moved the family to Cape Dorset after Parr was injured in an accident. Today Nuna is renowned nationally and internationally for his dancing and walking bears.  A self-taught carver, Nuna first started carving in 1957, when he was eight years old. When asked why he specialized in polar bears, he candidly says that they are easier to carve than walruses, which are more complicated because of their tusks. He prefers to carve large pieces, with his large bears highly sought-after.
