Mary Tutsuitok

Date of Birth: July 20, 1972 in Arviat
Residence: Arviat
Medium/Materials: Carving – Stone-Basalt, Steatite
Mary Tutsuitok’s mother-in-law is the late renowned artist Lucy Tasseor Tutsuitok, who was a great influence on Mary’s artistic development.  Mary started to carve in 1990, and learned how to carve from watching her mother Alice Akammak and her mother-in-law Lucy.
Mary’s favourite subject is the stone figures that she decorates with colorful beads. Mary also enjoys engaging in traditional Inuit ways
such as going out on the land and fishing.
Mary prefers to carve using simple tools rather than power tools.  In addition to carving, Mary is a talented seamstress who makes wall hangings, dolls, and other sewing crafts.  Mary believes that her addition of beadwork to her stone carvings is what makes her style unique.
